A little pause

"I'm not wearing that. Forget it Zag," Lady Megaera's harsh refusal echoes through the tranquillity of the glade prince Zagreus had chosen for their impromptu getaway.

Looking down at his hands holding the product of the last… well, some time of efforts, he chuckles.

“Because it would make you a little less scary?”,he teases, plucking out a new flower to add to the crown to make it a little less flimsy. He grins. “C’mon Meg, I can assure you your reputation is safe with us. Right, Than?”

Besides he’s pretty positive no amount of flower crowns could ever diminish the terror of an angry Fury.

Flicking a looser strand of blue hair behind her ears, Megaera snorts, rolling hwe eyes.

“No, it's because it's hideous.”

Sharp and direct as ever.

“It isn’t that bad! Than, you tell her!”

By the way his shoulders raise and fall, Death would much like not be involved in the matter. He buries himself a little more in the book that has kept him occupied since they arrived.

“Than!” Zagreus insists, giving him a playful kick on the side. “And what are you reading again?” he cranes his neck to get a glimpse of the page that seems to be engrossing his boyfriend so much.

“Please don’t tell me it’s one of my father’s documents.”

He means, even inevitable Death can take a little pause from work from time to time.

“A novel,” Thanatos resigns. “Well, some of it. What that shade remembered.”

By his tone, Zagreus isn’t going to get much more for now.

“Still, pay me attention two secs, would you?”

Slowly, Thanatos lifts his gaze. With a single glance, his verdict is merciless.

“She’s right, Zag,” he says in his death-sentence voice. The prince of the underworld kicks him a tad harder. “Hey, you try then,” he protests, feigning offense despite the clear laughter in his voice.

“Yes, Thanatos, we better teach him before he goes around distributing these…” Grimacing Lady Megaera gestures toward Zagreus’ messy attempt, “things.”

Dutifully, Thanatos complies. Amused indignation blossoms in Zagreus’ chest, as he watches Death’s deft fingers twist and braid Elysian flowers like he hasn’t done nothing else all his immortal life.

Upon turning toward Megaera his mouth falls agape. “That’s not fair.”

The fury is possibly even better at that, the flower crown she’s slowly weaving a work of art.

“What?” Megaera says, defensively, “I don’t spend all my time whipping criminals. That’s my job. You know the difference.”

Zagreus sighs. “Yeah, guess I do.”

He moves a little closer to Megaera to better watch her work. The way her hands move is surely enticing. Not that Than’s are any less amazing. Soon enough, two different but equally beautiful flower crowns are ready for the prince to examine.

“I mean … What do I have to say? They’re gorgeous, you win this round.”

And they are even more on the heads’ of the people he loves the most once he convinces both Than and Meg to wear them. The lilacs of the Elysian blooms complement both Megaera’s blue locks and Thanatos’ pearly strands. It makes a lovely picture.

It isn’t long before Zagreus ends up with his head in Megaera’s lap and his feet tossed across Thanatos’s legs, the ever-moving prince for once wishing for nothing but that stillness, that calm. Above him the Elysian sky is a vastness of sapphire blue, a perfect illusion. He lets his eyes get lost in it.

“We should do it more often,” he says, accomodating a little better against Meg, looking at her from down below. He’s graced with one of the fury’s rare smiles. Don't get him wrong, he understands why she’s so careful and secure with them. Her job doesn’t call for many smiles, not of the soft kind at least.

He’s happy to not be anymore on her bad side.

“Yes, it is nice,” Megaera admits, cautiously. “Comfy down there?”

“Mhm. You still don’t have to go, right, Than?”

Flipping a page, Death shakes his head, sending petals falling all around. “Not yet. Mortals can have a little more time.”

“Good.”

Soon they’ll be back to their obligations, two of the most feared creatures in the universe, and Zagreus too will have to restart his never-ending quest to escape his father’s realm and test the security system.

Soon, not yet. For now there’s just the soft grass and a gentle breeze blowing over the Lethe clear water and through the trees. For now they are at peace.
